land Barren County’s laid-back pace and friendly feel has always held a certain allure. Once you discover this land, it's not hard to see why people say, "This would be a nice little place to live." Agriculture is a way of life in Barren County. It’s the No. 1 thing that drives our economy since we are the No. 1 producer of milk, burley tobacco, hay and cattle in the state of Kentucky.

You will find some of the most sincere and friendly people right here in Barren County. While many rural areas have struggled to attract commerce, businesses here are thriving. However, that doesn't mean that technology and industry are not very apparent. In fact, tourism officials believe that even more travelers will be attracted to the region in the near future, simply by increasing marketing efforts. “It’s just a matter of letting the world know who we are and what we have to offer.” says Ann Stewart, executive director of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist & Convention Commission. That's exactly what we expect to do here.

Location

Barren County is in south-central Kentucky, about 90 miles southeast of Louisville and 90 miles northeast of Nashville.

Beginnings

Barren County was founded in 1798 and named for the barrens or meadowlands in the northern portion of the county. Glasgow was established in 1799 and named for the city in Scotland.


Interesting Facts


The White House has selected Glasgow as a Preserve America City, which recognizes communities that respect and savor history.

Television journalist Diane Sawyer was born in Glasgow on Dec. 22, 1945.

Legendary outlaw Jesse James once rode through Barren County holding up stagecoaches.

Mammoth Cave National Park includes the world’s longest cave, with more than 300 miles of mapped passageways.

The Brigadoon State Nature Preserve encompasses 181 acres of mature forest adjacent to the Barren River Reservoir .


Glasgow’s sister city is Glasgow, Scotland.

The mayor and vice mayor of Lexington, Ky., are Barren County natives.
